Great time to be a Philly sports fan.....spring hasn't been as much fun not having to watch the Flyers or 76ers in the playoffs. But luckily we haev the Phillies who constantly make our hitting coach turned manager look so good: After 36 games, the Phillies have scored three runs or fewer in 20 of them. Not surprisingly, the Phils are 4-16 in those games. The only good news is that the 4-12 Eagles have tickets available for 2013. Hopefully we can maintain some good spring weather to forget about our sports teams.
Last weekend, I was away in Texas (Dallas/Austin) and then in New Orleans - great time as expected. What was not expected was missing my flight out of New Orleans thanks to the highway (I-10) being shut down at 3AM thanks to a double shooting. Fortuneatly, US Air actually took good care of us - putting us on the next direct flight back to PHL.
For those thinking about taking the bus trip to the Preakness, don;t delay as I believe the first bus is nearly sold out and not sure there will be a second bus added this year.
This upcoming week is the Night Market (#22) in Fairmount - info below - a fun night of food/booze/entertainment.
My inspirational video of the week is a commencement speech that I thought we all could learn from - or use as a good reminder to ourselves.
And I will close with some information from the 'state of center city'. The PDF is here. Shows we really need to focus on job growth in Philly (by lowering taxes) instead of having so many Philly residents drive out to the burbs each day. If anyone is interested in a triplex near 25th and Brown (Art Museum) as an investment property - please let me know. One is coming to the market shortly - can send you the financials. - Mark

2) Eurocircle TastesWines of the Balkans @ JET, May 1
Thursday, May 16 2013 - 6:30 pm @ Jet Wine Bar 1525 South Street, Philadelphia
RSVP & Event Info (Members only, you must login with your email/password)
Join Jill Weber, the owner of our favorite wine bar JET, and producer of "The Wining Archaeologist", as we explore the wines of the Balkans. Often overlooked as a wine growing region, the Balkans are once again undergoing a revolution, but this time a much more congenial one. The region is in the spotlight again, as its wineries are gaining attention at International wine competitions and festivals.
Jill has selected wines of the Balkan Wine Project, whose mission is to introduce the US market to the Balkans "through a wine bottle". We will be tasting wines from the Milian Jelic winery in Serbia- the only winery growing the Morava grape. In addition, we will try Vranec from the Stobi Winery of Macedonia, and Malvazija from the Trapan Istrian winery in Croatia.
Afterward, we will gather upstairs in the wine bar, and enjoy beautiful weather and a few more drinks with our Eurocircle friends.

25) the Annual Haitian Flag Day celebration gala at the African American Museum in Philadelphia on May 18th
This year’s theme—The First Black Republic: Maintaining a Legacy of Freedom
The Haitian Professionals of Philadelphia (HPP) will host their annual Haitian Flag Day charity gala on Saturday, May 18, 2013 at 6:30pm, at the African American Museum in Philadelphia on 7th and Arch Streets in Philadelphia. This year’s theme will be, The First Black Republic: Maintaining a Legacy of Freedom, which will highlight the dynamism of Haitian culture and use the legacy of freedom embodied by the Haitian Revolution to support human rights and justice-oriented work in the developing world. The evening program will include performances by local and international musical and visual artists illustrating the innovative artistry, history, and culture of Haiti. Also, the gala will feature a highly-anticipated presentation of special guests and prominent voices in the Haitian community as well as a proclamation and citation from Philadelphia city officials. Most importantly, 100% of the profits the event will go to the Haitian Professionals of Philadelphia Haiti Relief Fund. Guests will have the opportunity to enjoy captivating artwork, music, poetry, as well as an update on the political & economic future, human rights, and a keynote speech of Haiti’s profound historical legacy on the world today. Authentic and delicious Haitian cuisine will be served by MJ Grill—the event’s caterer. HPP will facilitate networking opportunities during the evening and special social media features will be used during the presentations. We will end the evening with a classical Kompas dance party. Since 1803, the Haitian Flag has symbolized the resiliency of African descendant peoples and the epic slave revolt that gave birth to the first modern Black Republic, while providing a blueprint for revolution that was adopted by oppressed people of Color throughout the world. Tickets to the gala are $25. If you have any questions, please contact Ivanley Noisette, the gala’s 2013 Press Coordinator at: 18mai@hpphilly.org. About the Haitian Professionals of Philadelphia The Haitian Professionals of Philadelphia is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
