Title: 19 Items (3-27-09) sponsored by American Male Salons
Body:

How bout them Wildcats?  Nova ripped Duke last night and it was great to see.  Think they can beat Pitt?

This week has been fun for me as I attended a concert at the Beacon Theatre with my dad in NYC.  It was his first concert since I went with him to see The Who in 1990 at Giants Stadium.  Outside the theatre, I saw someone get a summons for smoking pot in the street.  The person did not get arrested – progress, right?
I also attended Philly Mag’s Martini Madness which was a nice event although the venue was way too small.

This weekend we have two new bars opening in Rittenhouse: Ladder 15 (15th and Sansom) and Adesso at (15th and Walnut).

And recently Strongbox opened (reviews below) at the old Monkey Bar.
This upcoming week we have the 3rd anniversary of Zee Bar (http://www.zee-bar.com).
I think these openings and anniversary explain a lot about where center city is heading and the progress already made.

I finally picked up my gun permit.  If anyone has some suggestions for me, please email me.

I have a friend looking to pick up some waitress shifts in town.  Can anyone give her any job leads?

City Chase is back for a second year. I heard good things about the event. More info below.

And lastly, it is time to boycott Kodak Gallery if you post your photos there.  After being free, they are now charging $5 to use their service.  Time to move to Flickr or other sites…..

1) PHILLY NEWS

A) MORE PHILLY TAX INCREASES
Mayor Nutter’s proposed $3.84 billion budget drew criticism from City Council members. Together with the tax hikes, which would be temporary, Nutter's chief deficit-closing tactic is to target the pay, pensions, health care, and work rules of the city's 23,197-member workforce. His proposals - which would freeze salaries for five years, lower city contributions to union health plans, reorganize the pension system, and reduce holidays, among other steps - would save $637 million over five years if he can clear a series of enormous political and contractual hurdles. The plan calls for a two-year hike in the property tax, specifically a hike of 19 percent in 2010 and a smaller increase, 14.5 percent over the current rate, in 2011. That is estimated to raise $272 million. In addition, Nutter is seeking approval from state lawmakers to increase the sales tax from 7 percent to 8 percent for three years, generating $342 million. Nutter also announced an assortment of new fees - including for commercial trash collection and over-the-counter medications at city health centers - and service cuts totaling $300 million over five years.

B) PHILLY POPOLUATION INFO
Philadelphia's annual declines in population have slowed: estimates for 2008 show a decline in population of just 1,200 people from the year before. The city lost nearly 38,000 residents in the five-year period prior to that. Most of the suburban counties in southeastern Pennsylvania have seen marginal growth in recent years.  Source: Philadelphia Inquirer; 3/19/09

5) Drink Beer...Save the Earth

Green Village Philadelphia is partnering with Philadelphia Brewing Company for an Earth Month fundraiser.  During Earth month (April 15-May 15) we encourage you to help us build an eco-village right here in Philadelphia by drinking a pint (or two...or three...) of Philadelphia Brewing Company's Fleur de Lehigh.  $1 will be donated to Green Village Philadelphia for every pint sold by participating bars and restaurants all across Philadelphia.  See, we make it easy.  We're not asking you to plant a tree or install solar panels on your home (although that would be an excellent idea)...just sit back and enjoy a delicious pint of Fleur de Lehigh.

We’d also love to have you enjoy some Fleur de Lehigh and other PBC brews with our Green Village board members and volunteers and supporters.  We're holding a Green Village Philadelphia bash at the Philadelphia Brewing Company on May 17th from 5-9pm. We'll have great food donated by Cosmic Catering and the Night Kitchen Bakery and of course Fleur de Lehigh courtesy of PBC. We'll also have some great all American roots music - country, rockabilly, blues, swing, and rock and roll and dancing too so wear your party dress and or dancing shoes!  Live music provided by The Estelles, The Rockafillys and Jim Fogarty and the Tonebenders.  For tickets and more information go to www.greenvillagephiladelphia.org.
