Last edition, I included an article on jails in Philly that was from 1990. Sorry about that – I did not notice the date when someone sent it to me. And the feedback on the question about taking off your shoes when entering someone’s home was almost unanimous – that it is ok to request your guests to remove their shoes.
New question this week sent in from a reader: Is it tacky to send Christmas cards via email instead of snail mail? Personally, I think it is ok but I am not the barometer of couth.
I had an active week, with some days on the mountain at Windham (http://www.windhammountain.com/). Unfortunately, the weather Gods must have been upset with me as the snow they were expecting turned in to rain on me. And while I type this from my desk in Philly, they are expecting a foot of snow today! http://www.weather.com/outlook/travel/businesstraveler/local/USNY1608?lswe=windham,%20ny&from=searchbox_localwx
All this while Vail, CO has reported almost five FEET of snow since December 1st. Sometimes I feel like I am never in the right spot. I say that but at least I was not on this gondola: http://www.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/americas/12/16/canada.gondola.accident/index.html or the skier that was not so lucky at Snowbird, Utah: http://www.kutv.com/mostpopular/story/Woman-dies-in-avalanche-at-Snowbird-resort/F6eLoeco-EivuPq3h6Ud6Q.cspx Reminder that trips are taking reservations for Park City, Steamboat, and Killington: www.PhillyTrips.com
Time to talk some football. First, the Eagles are alive. If we can win our last two games, although we will not be guaranteed a spot in the playoffs, we will most likely end up there. Big weekend with us needing a W in Washington, while watching the scoreboard with Atlanta and Tampa Bay. Hard to believe that Reid playing for a tie versus going for the win against Cinci might be the difference in us getting in to the playoffs. And how about the BCS mess? Seven teams with one loss and two undefeated teams. Yet, we have a championship game somehow. What a stupid system….
Red Ball has been announced for March 7, 2009: http://www.theredball.org For those looking for a Christmas Eve event, consider 32/Cuba Libre. Early on it is mostly a Jewish crowd but as the night advances, the Christmas goers do show up: http://www.pulseofphilly.com/
Here is something that I thought was interesting. The Detroit main papers are eliminating home delivery for many weekdays. Talk about the power of the Internet. http://www.cnn.com/2008/US/12/16/detroit.newspapers/index.html Detroit newspapers
It is a crazy time in the world and an interesting time to buy/sell a home. I read today that the 30-Year Fixed Rate mortgage fell to 37-Year Low – around 5%. Here is a good article on Graduate Hospital that is worth sharing: http://www.philly.com/philly/hp/news_update/20081219_In_Philly__Southwest_Center_City_is_the_place_to_buy.html?page=1&c=y As always, if you are thinking of buying or selling a home, please let me know. Yes, it is true, I have my Realtor license… - Mark

14) South Street Bridge Update
The South St. Bridge is now closed to all traffic. In response to recent inquires concerning work schedules for the demolition and reconstruction of the South St. Bridge, please be advised: The contractor's regular hours of operation will be from 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM. Night time work is NOT anticipated east of the I-76 interchange. The demolition of the I-76 interchange will commence this week and will last for approximately 3 weeks. Because this work has to be done while traffic flow on I-76 is at its lowest, this phase will be done at night. The hours of operation will be 10 PM to 5 AM.
While this demolition is being conducted, westbound I-76 traffic will be directed over the South St. ramps and back to the expressway.
SEPTA has clarified that there will be four afternoon return trips on its Route 12 bus from University City to the east side of the river. Consult the printed schedule posted on www.SEPTA.ORG for exact times. For more information, visit: http://www.phila.gov/southstreetbridge
